Is It Time To Take Your Online Business International?

By Brad Hauck

Do you offer products or services and at the current time you’re only selling or promoting those products or services to local or national customers? One of the issues that online business owners often struggle with is whether or not they should start marketing their business on an international level. If you’ve thought about doing so before or you’re considering it in the future, let’s take a look at a few things that can help you decide if it’s time to take your online business internationally.

One of the first things to take into consideration is whether or not there’s a demand for your products or services internationally? While this question is difficult to answer with certainty, there are a few things that you can check into that will give you more insight. For example, if you have Google Analytics or another analytics service set up on your website, you can check to see where your website’s traffic is coming from. If you see a lot of international visitors, it doesn’t mean that you’re going to get online orders from those visitors if you do decide to go international, but it does provide you with a better overall picture of your website’s traffic.

Even if you find that there’s a lot of interest in your products or services, it doesn’t necessarily mean that your business will do well on an international level. The other part of the equation here is competition. If you take your online business international, there’s a good chance that the amount of competition is going to increase. It’s a good idea to research if your business can adequately compete with businesses in your niche who already sell internationally.

Finally, what sort of products or services does your business offer? Just because a product or service does well locally or nationally, does not mean that it will do as well internationally. For example, if you’re selling services that you can only provide locally, it’s not going to make any sense to start offering them to people around the world unless you plan on expanding offline as well.

It’s not an easy decision to make, but if you do good research, you’ll have a better idea of what the best option is for your specific business.
